Reviews "1984 is a surprisingly good year made under very trying conditions. D'Yquem began its harvest on October 15th and made its last pass through the vineyards on November 13th. Seventy-five percent of the crop was retained for d'Yquem. The wine at present exhibits a great deal of smoky oak in its bouquet, which is also filled with scents of smoked almonds, cooked pineapples, and honey and caramel. In the mouth, the wine is less flamboyant, with less glycerin and power than usual, but it is still a rich, full-bodied d'Yquem with a great deal of personality and character.

Served from an ex-chateau bottle. Sauternes only produced two exceptional wines in 1982: Suduiraut and Yquem. Although I have encountered the 1982 Chateau d’Yquem on three occasions, this is the finest bottle. It was an early vintage, physiological ripeness reached on September 16. Rainfall interrupted the harvest that really could not start in earnest until November 2, for just four days. It has a lucid amber color, and a fully mature bouquet with mandarin and marmalade aromas that are pure and well-delineated.

A wonderful fruity dessert wine from the 1970 vintage that is still drinking well.

Château Liot is a 20-hectare property producing on average 5,500 cases per year. It is located in the south-west of the Barsac appellation and its vineyards border those of Château Climens. Liot's vineyards (Sémillon 85%, Sauvignon Blanc 10%, Muscadelle 5%) lie on a gravel/silt/alluvial topsoil and limestone subsoil.
The grapes are fermented in vats and the wine is then matured in oak barrels (15% new) for 15-18 months. Liot's wines are typically fresh and refined and display marvellous purity of fruit.

A year with a wet spring and cooler-than-average weather until July. Heavy rain fell in mid-September, followed by three weeks of dry weather and two small windows of opportunity around the 20th of October that were taken advantage of to pick most of the crop. The ensuing four weeks of rain ruined the remaining grapes. A small production for this discreet, medium-sweet vintage of Yquem.

The pleasure derived from tasting Yquem is difficult to describe. It offers a myriad of well-balanced, complex flavours that generate even more harmonies over time.

The 1967 Chateau Filhot may be the perfect after dinner wine. Deep amber gold. Lovely nose of grapey botrytis and caramel. Long and mature on the palate. Drink soon, but offers a lovely ending to the meal.

The Château Filhot was founded in 1709 by Romain de Filhot and is now owned and managed by one of his descendants: count Henri de Vaucelles.

YQUEM HARVEST NOTES: Weather was mediocre in summer, but improved in autumn. The harvest was very long: 48 days' work out of 55 to bring in a very worthwhile and slightly above average crop in terms of volume. A very rich vintage.
